"Most musicians are influenced and inspired by the works of other great musicians who have achieved excellence."
Russell Thompson is no exception being inspired by Grover Washington and Herbie Hancock, just to name a few. However, Russell Thompson + Free Agent has taken a departure from the traditional sounds of Jazz and created a sound fusing R&B, Jazz, Soul and Hip-Hop which could be described as urban Neo-Jazz, which spans generations and music styles.
With the assistance of Gerald Levert's input on vocals and vocal arrangements, producer Jim Buchanan orchestrates these shimmering urban jazz joints for sax player Russell Thompson -- a fixture in Gerald's recording projects -- to the hilt. Other Levert cronies include Sherena Wynn, Dennis Williams, and ex-Rude Boy Melvin Sephus. The swami saxist glosses and roasts on "Bingo's Revenge," "Over and Over" (featuring Gerald Levert), "Wildflower," and "Attitude." A regular and remixed rendition of "Hold on to Your Dream" fills two of the lucky 13 slots; the late William "Wee Gee" Howard (ex-Dramatics) originally recorded the uplifting title track on Cotillion Records.
